Ragweeds are flowering plants, common in North America. Pollen from ragweed causes many people allergy symptoms. The seed of ragweed has no paricular adaptation for dispersal. Most of the seeds of the ragweed plant fall into the soil next to the plant. However, since they often reach high densities in soil, they are easily spread from one site to another in soil clinging to boots, tires of vehicles, etc.
Earthworms live in the soil near the plants. An Ohio State weed scientist found that the earthworms collect the seeds around their burrows, for reasons the researchers have yet to determine. Although the earthworm will collect other weed seeds, giant ragweed seed seems to be the earthworm’s favorite to collect. About two-thirds of the ragweed seed buried by earthworms are capable of producing seedlings that emerge from the soil.
