I disagree with Shannon's statement. To subtract mixed numbers with unlike denominators, you need to first convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions with common denominators. Then, you can subtract the fractions and simplify if needed.
For example, if we want to subtract 7 1/4 from 9 3/8:
9 3/8 = 9 27/8
7 1/4 = 7 2/8
Now we can subtract the fractions:
9 27/8 - 7 2/8 = 9 - 7 + 27/8 - 2/8 = 2 + 25/8 = 2 25/8
So, 9 3/8 - 7 1/4 = 2 25/8.
