“What?” Annie exclaimed in disbelief. She was at the train station staring at the departures and arrivals board. Next to her train number in big bold letters was the word CANCELLED. She turned toward Marielle, her best friend and travel companion, and said, “What do we do now?” Annie was beginning to panic.

“OK. It’s fine. We can figure this out. We’ll just talk to the person at the counter and she can book us on the next train home," Marielle said reassuringly.

“But, Mar, today is my dad’s birthday. I can’t believe I’m not going to be home to go to his birthday dinner.” Tears were pooling in Annie’s eyes.

“Annie, it’s OK. Let’s think of something we can do for him on his birthday from here. What’s his favorite dessert?” Marielle was already on her phone looking up the phone number for the restaurant.
