It is generally accepted that 1 litre fills a cube of 10 cm by 10 cm by 10 cm,

or, since 10 cm = 1 dm,
there would be 10 by 10 by 10 or 1000 dm^3
in 1 m^3
So clearly 1000 litres would go into the cube of 1 m on each side.
