Coach Bellows paced the cement floor by the lockers as he spoke.
“Sure, we’ve lost every basketball game this season, but I know you boys can change that! If you think of yourselves as losers, you will keep losing. You have to think like winners! Now, let’s go have a great second half!”
Huck knew it was no use—the Bears would lose again. He opened his locker to get a sweatband, and sticking out of his school shoes was a white square of paper. It read, “If you want to know how your team can start winning, be at center court at 8 p.m. sharp.”
That evening after dinner, Huck came back to the gym and stood at center court.
This is ridiculous, he thought when no one showed up. He was about to leave when the air shimmered and the ground vibrated. Huck thought it must be an earthquake, but then everything went black.
A male voice said, “Don’t be afraid. I just want to show you what a winning team looks like—your team.”
Huck felt himself float upward, into the bleachers, and suddenly a basketball game was going on. The Bears were winning by 20 points! They looked so confident and proud, like they believed they could do anything. Huck also noticed that the uniforms were old-fashioned. Then he saw the date on the scoreboard: November 12, 1963. He had traveled back in time more than 50 years!
The buzzer rang, and the crowd chanted, “City champs!”
“So it is possible,” Huck said aloud, “if we only start thinking like winners.”
“Exactly!” the voice said.
The next moment, Huck stood at center court again. He had an important lesson to share with the team, but they were never going to believe how he learned it!
