The Delhi Sultanate was a Muslim kingdom that ruled over Delhi and much of northern India from the late 12th century to the early 16th century. It was established by various dynasties of Turkic and Afghan origin, who came to India and established their rule after the decline of the Hindu Chola and Pala empires.
The sultanate was known for its military conquests, administrative reforms, and the patronage of Islamic culture and literature. Its period of rule saw the spread of Islam in India, as well as the development of Indo-Islamic architecture, art, and music.
The Delhi Sultanate came to an end in 1526 when the Mughal Empire, led by Babur, defeated the last sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi, at the Battle of Panipat.
