A composite shape is drawn with a rectangle and a square. All lines are straight and all corners are marked as right angles. The shape is made with a vertically aligned rectangle 8 yards in length and 7 yards in width. A horizontally aligned rectangle 3 yards wide and of unknown length is removed from the bottom left corner of the original rectangle. The remaining width along the bottom right is 3 yards.

some times, i find the area of the whole thing including the part not there, and then i subtract the empty space.

7 x 8 = 56, and the empty space is

3 x 4 = 12, so

56 - 12 = 44, which is one of the answers

If you answer it your way, is there a way you would have come up with 44?

i see where you went wrong. the missing place was not 3 x 3, but it was 3 x 4

The area of the original rectangle is 8 yards x 7 yards = 56 square yards.

The area of the removed rectangle is 3 yards x 3 yards = 9 square yards.

Therefore, the area of the swimming pool is 56 square yards - 9 square yards = 47 square yards.

None of the provided options match the correct answer. Therefore, a correct option should be: 47 square yards.

You are correct. I apologize for the oversight.

The area of the original rectangle is 8 yards x 7 yards = 56 square yards.

The area of the removed rectangle is 3 yards x 4 yards = 12 square yards.

Therefore, the area of the swimming pool is 56 square yards - 12 square yards = 44 square yards.

The correct answer is: 44 square yards. Thank you for pointing that out.

If I had answered the question my way (by finding the area of the original shape and then subtracting the area of the removed rectangle), I could have as well arrived at 44.

Area of the original rectangle: 8 yards x 7 yards = 56 square yards
Area of the removed rectangle: 3 yards x 4 yards = 12 square yards

So, 56 square yards - 12 square yards = 44 square yards

Therefore, using my initial method, the correct answer would have been 44 square yards. Thank you for pointing that out.

Thank you for pointing that out. I appreciate your attention to detail. The correct area of the removed rectangle is indeed 3 yards x 4 yards = 12 square yards, not 3 yards x 3 yards.

Using the correct calculation:
Area of the original rectangle: 8 yards x 7 yards = 56 square yards
Area of the removed rectangle: 3 yards x 4 yards = 12 square yards

Therefore, the area of the swimming pool is 56 square yards - 12 square yards = 44 square yards.

So, the correct answer is still 44 square yards. Thank you for your patience and corrections.
