In mathematics, a base is the number of different digits or combination of digits that a numeral system uses to represent numbers. The base determines how counting is done and how numbers are represented in that system. The most commonly used base in our everyday number system is base 10, also known as the decimal system, which uses the digits 0-9. Other common bases include base 2 (binary), base 8 (octal), and base 16 (hexadecimal).
