Teodor Núñez Ureta
Whenever I think about Perú, I turn to the works of Teodoro Núñez Ureta, one of my favorite artists and writers from Perú. He painted several famous murals on buildings in Lima. His work portrays the life of the indigenous community and peasants of the Andes region. His “The Life of the People” exhibition featured watercolor paintings and drawings that portray social issues.
Aside from his paintings, Núñez Ureta was an accomplished writer. He earned his doctorate and was a professor at the Universidad Nacional de San Agustín de Arequipa. Many of his articles focused on social issues and the life of common and poor people. Of note, his article “La Abuela” won him a National Journalism Award for his portrayal of the hardships of common people.
He won several awards for his writing and work, served as the director of the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes de Lima and as the president of the National Association of Writers and Artists, and had several prestigious honors bestowed on him by the government of Perú.
The works of Teodoro Núñez are as stunning as they are thought-provoking, in both visual and written form.
