Can you please give me a few different math examples of what you meant when you said - You do not add powers with different exponents, but not powers of different bases. Thank you so much.

You only add the powers of numbers with the same base and different exponents if you are multiplying the two numbers.
For example,
x^2 * x^b = x^(a+b)
For example,
x^2 * x^b = x^(a+b)
