In x years, Conner will be half of Josh's age. They are 4 and 12 respectively.
In equation form, you would do as though x is a number,
In x years, Conner will be 4+x years old, and Josh will be 12+x.
Therefore
2*(4+x) = 12+x

2(4+x)=12+x
8+2x =12+x
2x =4+x
x=4
8+2x =12+x
2x =4+x
x=4
