How many times can the ball be touched by one team before returning it over the net?

In volleyball, a team is allowed a maximum of three touches to return the ball over the net. The three touches are commonly referred to as "bump, set, spike". Each player can touch the ball up to three times, but no player is allowed to contact the ball twice consecutively (except in the case of a block).
