Passage 2:

Indigo was used to dye clothing blue. There were many barriers to grow these crops
in high enough volumes to make a profit. Overall, the crops did not meet the
expectations of the King or the trustees.
The King wanted to establish Georgia for defense in addition to profit reasons.
Defense is the act of preventing attack. The Spanish were in Florida. South Carolina
was a profitable colony for England. The King wanted to use Georgia as a buffer
between the Spanish and South Carolina. Several forts were built in this area
including Fort Frederica on Saint Simons Island. Fort King George in Darien had been
abandoned but was reestablished. Several conflicts and battles would occur
between the Spanish and Georgia colonists.
The colony of Georgia provided its intended purpose for defense from the
Spanish on several occasions. The War of Jenkins’ Ear helped prove that Georgia was
needed. Robert Jenkins had his ear cut off in a battle with the Spanish. He returned
to England with his ear. The people of England demanded that Spain be punished for
this act. James Oglethorpe tried to capture the Spanish fort of Saint Augustine in
Florida. He retreated, and then the Spanish decided to attack Saint Simons.
Oglethorpe and the Native American Indians were able to push back the Spanish at
the Battle of Bloody Marsh. The Spanish and English then agreed that the Saint
Johns River would be the boundary between Florida and Georgia.
The Charter of 1732 outlined strict rules for how the colony would operate. The
trustees could not get paid, own land, or hold office in the colony. The trustees truly
believed that the charter would help the poor. The colony would not have rum,
Jewish people, slaves, or lawyers. Defending against the Spanish was an expectation
of all in the colony. The land that was given to the settlers could not be sold. It had to
be passed down to males in the family.
There were eventually issues with the Charter of 1732 and the strict rules. When
the colony was faced with major medical concerns and disease
outbreaks, Oglethorpe broke the rules. He allowed Jewish doctors from Portugal to
come to the colony. They would settle in Savannah. They are credited with saving
the colony from total devastation. The strict rules in the colony also limited
economic growth and opportunities. Many of the settlers were frustrated about this.
The trustees eventually gave in to many of the concerns of the colonists.
Passage 1:
There are many different complex reasons that the Europeans wanted to
explore and settle in North America. The Spanish, English, and French were all
eager to expand and explore their kingdoms. There was a tremendous level of
competition between these three countries for economic and political control and
dominance.
General James Oglethorpe of England proposed the idea of the colony that
would become Georgia in the early 1730s. Oglethorpe was a high-ranking officer in
the military. When he left the military, he focused on helping the poor and people
with overwhelming debt. Oglethorpe and the King of England worked together to
establish the colony of Georgia. Georgia is named after King George II. Oglethorpe
and twenty trustees received funding and a charter in 1732. A trustee is a person
that is given power to control something. The trustees would be able to control a
large part of the government in the new colony. The three main reasons for
founding Georgia were philanthropy, economics, and defense.
James Oglethorpe's main focus was philanthropy. He had a close friend die
from mistreatment in prison for being indebted in London. The goal for Georgia
would be to help the poor and people in debt. Debt means owing money and a
debtor is a person who owes an amount of money. The Charter of 1732 outlined
the rules for how the colony would treat these people. The trustees wanted to
avoid a large wealth gap between large landowners and poor people. This had
happened in other colonies like South Carolina. Many of Georgia’s first settlers
were eager to move from England. The colony offered 50 acres of land if the
government paid for this ship voyage, or 500 acres of the settlers paid for their own
voyage. An acre is a measurement of land. They were also offered food, seeds, and
agriculture supplies for a year. Many people were eager to participate in this
opportunity.
England was hoping to create a mercantilism economy. This is a type of
economy where a nation exports more than they import. The economics of the
colony was important to King George II. Economics is the production and study of
money. The King was hopeful that colonies could grow rice, tobacco, indigo, and
silk. These crops were not grown in England. Silk was so important that all new
landowners were required to set aside portions of their land to grow mulberry trees
on. The mulberry trees were essential in the production of silk.
