An airplane is heading due south at a speed of 515 km/h. A wind begins blowing from the southwest at a speed of 100 km/h (average). (Hint: First draw a diagram.)
(a) What is the velocity (magnitude and direction) of the plane relative to the ground? magnitude/direction (east of south)
(b) How far off course will it be after 8 min if the pilot takes no corrective action?

a) 590 km/h
b) 10km

a) triangle with length 515 km and 100km as the two shorter sides. Label longer side x. Angle between two shorter sides is 135, using cosine rule. Longer side = (approx) 590.

b)590000/3600 x (8x60)- 515000/3600 x( (8x60) = 10000m = 10km

a plane is flying west with a speed of 125 m/s, a wind of 45m/s is blowing East. What is the resultant speed of the plane? Must include units and direction.
