Rewards need to be linked to the behavior that you want to be repeated. Typically this is accomplished by having the reward immediately follow the desired behavior. The reward can be material or some sort of praise (e.g., "Thanks," "Good job," a hug, etc.). As one saying goes, "Catch them (your children or any people) being good."
