Positive consequences of Westward Expansion include opportunities for settlers to acquire inexpensive land and start a new life, the development of new industries and infrastructure (such as railroads), the expansion of American democracy and ideals, and the growth of the American economy.
Negative consequences of Westward Expansion include conflicts with Native American tribes who were displaced from their lands and lost their way of life, tensions between settlers and Native Americans, loss of biodiversity and destruction of natural habitats due to the expansion of agriculture and industry, and the displacement and mistreatment of Mexican Americans during the Mexican-American War.
