I've only read a summary of this story, but since the weather has just turned cold and nasty, I don't think that b. is the best answer. The birds have enjoyed a mild autumn up to this time.

Ahh! I think I've got it (after puzzling for a few hours).
It must be C. The weather was mild all fall, yet it and the birds suddenly turned violent.
