If the perimeter of a square is 12 inches wouldn't you just add 12+12+12+12 and get 48?

It depends upon the question. If the PERIMETER of a square is 12 inches, then each SIDE must be 12/4 = 3 inches. If each SIDE of the square is 12 inches, then the perimeter is 48 inches.

from the little 2 you have at the end of each possible answer, I conclude that you meant "in^2" or square inches.
So the question deals with "area", and probably said ...

As DrBob already told you, each side must be 3 inches and then the area would be 9 square inches
