Would "12 years plus half of 18" equal to 18?
How about working out:
"12 years plus x/2 equals x"

The problem is that we don't know Sally's age. All we know is that she is x years old and x equals 12 + x/2.

x = 12 + (1/2)x
(1/2)x = 12
x = 24
