Define radiation
1 answer
Radiation refers to the process in which energy is transmitted in the form of electromagnetic waves or particles. It can occur naturally or be generated artificially. There are several types of radiation, including ionizing radiation and non-ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is high-energy radiation that can remove tightly bound electrons from atoms and molecules, potentially causing damage to living tissues and genetic material. It includes X-rays, gamma rays, and some forms of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Non-ionizing radiation, on the other hand, has lower energy and does not possess enough energy to remove electrons from atoms or molecules. This type of radiation includes radio waves, microwaves, infrared radiation, and visible light.
