Question

Find the slope of any line parallel to the line through points (17, 4) and (5, 8).

the slope of these is:
8-4 4 1
----- = --- = ---
17-5 12 3

is 1/3 the correct answer?

No
you started with the y of the second point, so you have to start with the x of the second point also
slope = (8-4)/(5-17) = - 1/3
