The wage rate in a certain trade is $8.60 and hour for a 40 hour work week and 1 1/2 times the base pay for overtime. An employee who works 48 hours in a week earns?

The employee's gross pay (before taxes and other deductions):

8.6 x 40 = a

8.6 x 1.5 x 8 = b
