Active transport is a process in which cells use energy (usually in the form of ATP) to move molecules or ions across a cell membrane, against their concentration gradient. This process is carried out by specific proteins called transporters or pumps. Active transport is essential for maintaining the appropriate balance of ions and molecules inside cells, as well as for the uptake of nutrients and the elimination of waste materials. Unlike passive transport, which does not require energy, active transport requires the expenditure of energy to move substances from an area of lower concentration to an area of higher concentration.
