My question is about scientific notations. Here is the problem. What I need clarification on is the power signs. When to add, subtract or multiply?
(2.4 x 10^-5)(4 x 10^-4)
is the anwer 9.6 x 10^-9 or 9.6 x 10^20
The answer is NOT 9.6 x 10^20.
Rember your rules of exponents: when multiplying, add exponents
a<sup>c</sup> * a<sup>d</sup> = a<sup>c+d</sup>
When going to powers, multiply exponents.
(a<sup>c</sup>)<sup>d</sup> = a<sup>c*d</sup>
