you divide the top number by the bottom number.
For Example say you had 5/4= so you would divide 4 into 5. So the answer would be 1/1/4.
You can also check you answer
Step 1: put 1/1/4 on a piece of paper.
Step 2: multipliy the bottom number which is 4(the denominator)and 1(the whole number)
Step 3: Add 1(the numberator)
And your answer is 5/4
