When Jefferson Thomas was a teenager, the southern United States was at the center of the civil rights movement. Leaders in the movement fought laws that said African Americans and white people must be kept apart. These leaders won a victory in 1954. The U.S. Supreme Court said that school segregation was against the law. Little Rock, Arkansas, intended to follow the ruling. It planned to gradually allow African-American students to attend all-white schools. In 1957, a group of African-American teenagers volunteered to integrate one such school. It was Central High School. Thomas was one of the students.
