Read history. People had hope during the Dark Ages, the Medieval plagues, and through many devastating wars.

Think about the opening line of Charles Dickens' <i>A Tale or Two Cities</i>: "It was the best of times; it was the worst of times."

We live in the greatest democracy the world has ever known. We can cure or ameliorate diseases that were deadly a hundred years ago. Our technology promises a great future.

What is there about the present time period that doesn't foster hope?
