how do octopus reproduce

1 answer

Octopuses reproduce thual reproduction. The male octopus has a specialized arm called a hectocotylus which is used to transfer sperm to the female. The male reaches out with the hectocotylus and inserts it into the female's mantle cavity, where the sperm is transferred to fertilize the eggs.

After fertilization, the female lays numerous fertilized eggs. Depending on the species, the female may attach the eggs to rocks or other surfaces or create a protective den where she cares for the eggs until they hatch. The female octopus typically guards and cares for the eggs during the incubation period, often not leaving the eggs to search for food, which can lead to her death shortly after the eggs hatch.

Once the eggs hatch, tiny juvenile octopuses called hatchlings emerge. They are fully independent from birth and begin their own individual lives in the ocean.
