Put a quart of cold tap water into each of four pans. In one pan, put two ice cubes; in another put 6 ice cubes; in the third, put 12 ice cubes. Don't put any ice cubes in the fourth pan.
Then, see how long it takes for each pan to come to a boil.

The question is worded poorly. It might be that the experiment is supposed to show something like: the temperature of water with lots of ice in it does not increase when heated, until the ice has melted.
The heat energy goes into disrupting the hydrogen bonds that hold the water molecules together in the solid state (ice), instead of increasing the kinetic energy of (liquid) water molecules.
