Viruses are much smaller than bacteria and are not considered living organisms because they lack the basic characteristics of life. While bacteria are single-celled organisms that can reproduce on their own, viruses cannot. Additionally, bacteria have their own metabolism and can obtain and use energy, whereas viruses rely on the host to reproduce and obtain energy.
