Tropic of Cancer is an imaginary line on the Earth that lies at approximately 23.5 degrees north of the equator. It marks the northernmost point where the sun can appear directly overhead at noon on the summer solstice, which occurs around June 21st. This location is named the Tropic of Cancer because when it was named, the sun appeared to be in the constellation Cancer during the summer solstice. The Tropic of Cancer divides the Earth into the Northern Hemisphere and the Southern Hemisphere.
