The event that led to the United States bombing Afghanistan on October 7, 2001, was the 9/11 terrorist attacks. On September 11, 2001, the extremist group Al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes, crashing two of them into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, and one into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed for Washington D.C. but crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers attempted to regain control from the hijackers. These coordinated attacks, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, were attributed to Al-Qaeda, and their leader Osama bin Laden, who was believed to be hiding in Afghanistan under the protection of the Taliban regime. In response, the United States launched an operation called Operation Enduring Freedom, beginning with airstrikes on Afghanistan on October 7, 2001.
