At the animal shelter, 1/3 of the animals are dogs, 2/12 are cats, and 19 are other animals. How many animals are at the shelter?

let the total number of animals be x
x/3 + 2x/12 + 19 = x
x/3 + x/6 + 19 = x
multiply by 6
2x + x + 114 = 6x
114 = 3x
x = 38
so number of dogs = 38/3 = not a whole number,
neither is 38/6 for number of cats
