make a table of values for x and y
(f(x) is really y,
f(x) = x^2 is the same as y = x^2
x y
0 0
1 1
2 4
3 9
-1 1
-2 4
-3 9
graph these points, they should give you a good outline of the curve.
for something like
f(x) = 3x - 3
then f(4) = 3(4)-3 = 9
wherever I saw an x, I subbed in a 4
you can now do the rest
