These plants are then eaten by animals, transferring the carbon into the animal's tissues. As animals break down food, carbon is returned to the atmosphere as carbon dioxide through the process of respiration. Carbon can also be released from the lithosphere as it releases carbon dioxide through volcanic eruptions. Lastly, carbon can be dissolved in water bodies such as oceans, lakes, and rivers and be transported between these systems.
