How is acid rain formed?

1 answer

Acid rain is formed when sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) react with water vapor, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere to form sulfuric acid (H2SO4) and nitric acid (HNO3). These gases are primarily produced by the burning of fossil fuels in industrial processes, vehicles, and power plants. When released into the atmosphere, they mix with water vapor and other chemicals to form the acidic compounds that fall to the ground as acid rain. Acid rain can cause harm to plant and animal life, and can also erode buildings and other infrastructure.
