Carbon-14 dating is only useful for dating organic matter up to about 50,000 years old, as beyond that point, the amount of carbon-14 remaining is often too small to be accurately measured. Fossils millions of years old are typically composed of mineralized matter and do not contain carbon-14. Therefore, alternative scientific methods such as radiometric dating using isotopes with longer half-lives, such as uranium-lead dating or potassium-argon dating, are used to determine the age of these fossils.
