Plants in the biosphere draw in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis, incorporating it into their tissues. When the plants die, their carbon is returned to the lithosphere as organic matter. As organic matter decomposes, it releases carbon back into the atmosphere or into bodies of water in the hydrosphere. The carbon cycle demonstrates how the different Earth systems interact and influence each other.
