The Normans invaded England in 1066 for several reasons, one of the main reasons being that William, Duke of Normandy had a claim to the English throne. After the death of Edward the Confessor, who had no children or clear successor, several claimants stepped forward to claim the throne. William was one of them and he argued that Edward the Confessor had promised him the throne. When Harold Godwinson was crowned King instead, William gathered an army and invaded England, ultimately defeating Harold at the Battle of Hastings and seizing the crown for himself.
