What happens in meiosis during anaphase 1?

During anaphase 1 of meiosis, the homologous chromosomes that were paired together during prophase 1 separate and move to opposite sides of the cell. The spindle fibers that were formed during prophase 1 contract and pull the chromosomes apart. This process is known as disjunction.
