The Mexican Cession was a treaty signed in 1848 between the United States and Mexico that ended the Mexican-American War. Under the terms of the treaty, Mexico ceded to the United States a large portion of its northern territories, including the modern-day states of California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, and parts of Colorado and Wyoming. In exchange, the United States paid Mexico $15 million and assumed responsibility for up to $3.25 million in claims against Mexico by American citizens. The treaty also established the Rio Grande as the southern boundary of Texas.
