The light in a compact fluorescent light bulb is produced when an electric current passes through a gas-filled tube, which contains mercury vapor. The electric current excites the mercury vapor, causing it to emit ultraviolet light. This ultraviolet light is then converted into visible light by a phosphor coating on the inside of the tube.
