Must be a British expression.
In America, no one actually says that -- we say "work myself to death"

Surely you have an idea what that would involve, if done literally.
Figuratively, that means you feel exhausted, as if doing anything requiring the least effort would kill you.
kind of like "work my fingers to the bone"
