An artist had some pins. He used 30 pins to make his first artwork. He then used 5/8 of the remainder to make his second artwork. If he still had 3/10 of his pins left, how many pins did he have at first?

starting with p pins, we have
p - 30 - 5/8 (p-30) = 3/10 p
or, more simply,
3p/40 = 45/4
so p = 150
check:
150-30 = 120
5/8 of 120 = 75
120-75 = 45 which is 3/10 of 150 ✅

p - 30 - 5/8 (p-30) = 3/10 p
or, more simply,
3p/40 = 45/4
so p = 150
check:
150-30 = 120
5/8 of 120 = 75
120-75 = 45 which is 3/10 of 150 ✅
