BE = bond energy
dHreaction = BEreactants - BEproducts
So to get a negative sign for dHreaction from bond energies (-dH is exothermic), which of the two on the right must be larger than the other one?
Right. The bond energy of the products must be larger than the bond energy of the reactants. That way you get a negative number for dHreaction and that is exothermic.
