which statement best describes the types of bonds shown in the diagram?
H CI = hydrogen chloride molecule
1. an ionic bond; the hydrogen ion is bonding with a chlorine atom.
2. an ionic bond; a hydrogen ion is bonding with a chlorine atom.
3. a covalent bond; the hydrogen atom's two electrons are being shared with the chlorine atom.
4. a covalent bond; the hydrogen atom's single electron is being shared with the chlorine atom.

None of the choices is correct but #4 is the closest to being correct. It is a polar covalent bond rather than a pure covalent bond. The correct answer is this is a polar covalent bond with the single electron of the H atom being shared with the chlorine atom's outside shell of seven electrons. By the way this is for the HCl gaseous molecule.
