There are two different flavours of cookies in a box – chocolate and mint. John removes 32 chocolate and 4 mint cookies. the remaining cookies are then divided into groups of 11. In each group, there are 8chocolate and 3mint cookies. What can be the greatest number of cookies in the box, if at least 80% of the cookies are chocolate flavoured?

1 answer

If there are x groups of 11, there are
8x chocolate
3x mint
and the box originally held
8x+32 chocolate
3x+4 mint
Now, we know that
(8x+32)/(11x+36) >= 4/5
x <= 4
so the box holds at most 11*4 + 36 = 80 cookies
