As the Roman empire conquered much of Europe around 2,000 years ago, Latin- another Indo-European language- spread across the empire. Modern-day French, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Romanian are all descendants of Latin. They are often called "Romance languages" because of this connection to the Roman Empire
