What does the phrase "poverty is an acid" mean??

If you don't already know let me explain that English is not my strong suit. I answer chemistry questions. However, for you I googled your question and came up with this. Apparently some student (Ben) had to explain an expository but in writing a good portion of the works from "Parker" it answers your question. If you read all of it and focus on the last sentence or two I think you can come up with a good answer. If that isn't enough, I suggest you Google the question, just as I did, and you find site after site after site that discussing this very point. Here is the first link.
