How do i explain the total charge of an atom

The total positive charge, due to the protons, is in the nucleus of an atom. The total negative charge, due to the electrons are outside the nucleus of an atom. The total + charge is the same as the total negative charge of an atom; therefore, the net chasrge is zero.
